A 5-session Acting Masterclass with Nelson Chia

Acting Techniques:

Learn essential techniques in acting from Acting Coach, award-winning Director and Actor, Nelson Chia, through the study and performance of scenes from selected plays. This masterclass is designed for aspiring actors who are eager to learn and mid-career actors who want to refresh their knowledge.


Class Structure:

The class will be a combination of performance and observation. Each participant will be assigned roles and given 2 or 3 short excerpts of scripts from contemporary and modern classics to prepare before the class. The preparation process will be made easier with written pointers provided to help with the learning process. During the class, participants will work in pairs to perform these scenes (about 10 mins each) while the rest of the class observes. Nelson Chia will provide direction and share essential techniques needed for an effective performance.


What You’ll Learn:

Participants will be exposed to various techniques in areas such as action, movement, rhythm, focus, characterization, voice, and speech, etc. You'll learn how to apply these techniques to create an effective performance and what to take note of when approaching a scene.


Language:

The class will be conducted in English, but participants may request to perform in Mandarin if there is a suitable pairing.

About the Instructor

Nelson is an acting coach, award-winning director and actor, writer and theatre lecturer. He is a well-respected artist with 30 years of experience in the field of performing arts. He had invested the last 10 years to the study and exploration of actor training methodologies by creating an ensemble that trains regularly and systematically. He was a lecturer at Lasalle College of the Arts and NUS Theatre Studies Programme, headed the theatre department at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, and currently sits on the Examination Board of the Intercultural Theatre Institute and the Industry Advisory Panel of Lasalle College of the Arts. Recently, he has been working with Mediacorp in a series of webinars and workshops for writers, directors and actors, and is currently an acting coach to some of the established and up-and-coming actors.
